If America's great legacy is it's insurance companies, are we really that great of a nation?

If America will "go down the crapper" if we have a public option, are we really that great to begin with? When I think of the American legacy, I think about Democracy, Equality, civil liberties & rights, etc. The things we came up with first,

Insurance is a service and has nothing to do with America's legacy.
It should be none of the federal government's business anyway.
