I deposited a Met Life check on friday, the bank manager said the funds would be available the next day. I checked on line. there are two categories, balance and available balance. the available balance reflected the amount I deposited. I wrote checks

Banks sometimes waive the automatic holding period when it comes to checks from very secure institutions. It also depends upon relationships your bank has with that other bank and maybe there are illiquidity issues at your institution, too.
