SunTrust and Regions Financial became the latest banks to retreat from charging debit card fees Monday, citing customer feedback.
Both banks said they will stop charging monthly fees this week -- $5 for SunTrust and $4 for Regions -- and will refund past charges to customers.
"That's great news," said SunTrust customer Adam Cooley, outside one of the bank's Charleston branches Monday.
Cooley said he's glad he'll no longer be charged for using his check card, but he wasn't upset about the fee to begin with.
"I wasn't going to switch banks, because they all seem to be doing it," he said.
But others have been switching banks because of debit fees. Consumers Union (the publisher of Consumer Reports) has been using its website takebackyourdollars.org to urge bank customers to "tell them they can't get away with it" and activists are promoting Nov. 5 as "bank transfer day."
"The credit union community has kind of rallied around it," said Jessica Jackson, vice president of corporate communications at South Carolina Federal Credit Union. "We're saying that every day is bank transfer day, here at South Carolina Federal, and we're going to be rolling out some incentives."

Not only does it affect nearly every credit card transaction, such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, but the bill specifically targets payment systems like eBay's PayPal, Amazon, and Google Checkout, that are used by many online businesses.
